Capacitor and Holographic: Magical metal patterns on thin foils

Leybold is the great brand name in web coating. Reinforced with the takeover of Kontex Technologies in 2003, Leybold Optics has become the undisputed market leader in the field of metalizing systems for capacitor foils, both in terms of technological leadership as well as in number of installed systems.

The continuous investment in new machine designs and, therewith, the development of new key components which, in many cases, constitute unique features in the market, formed the basis of this success.

One example is “SuperBias”, a revolutionary system, consisting of electron beam guns and two plasma-cathodes. The foil will be charged by the electron beam gun before the coating process, with the goal to reach the maximum adhesion of the substrate onto the cooled process-roller and to transfer the thermal load efficiently. After coating the foil is re-conditioned via a plasma cathode treatment.

The development of a new free-margin-oil-evaporator, based on so called flash-evaporation, is another ground-breaking innovation. The patented invention by Leybold Optics entails numerous advantages like higher productivity, efficiency and flexibility of the system, improved quality of the products, reduced costs and operator convenience. What is more, it was demonstrated under production conditions that through the precise control of evaporation rate, the oil evaporator also is suited for products which had to be manufactured by complex and expensive masking tape so far.

Our proprietary DISS (Dual In-situ Sensor) technology allows us to control process results and optimize product quality in unprecedented performance. Combined in one frame, two line-sensors measure coating thickness and dimensions of all free margins. In real-time the sensor achieves complete coating-cross-profile with a high clock rate, suited for the maximum process velocity and adjusted for a big variety of pattern applications.

Based on the modular system, the big number of high-end options allows the enhancement from a standard system to a powerful system for uninterrupted mass production.
