Cap-M: High speed and excellent results even on ultra thin film
Alzenau, 10/2005
A fast Precision Pattern Printing module, the introduction of the new Super Bias system and a special development in the field of winding systems: LEYBOLD OPTICS (LO) has improved Cap-M, its well-known multi-value platform for manufacturers of capacitor films.
The new pattern printing module coupled with an optimized synchronization of the rolls allows printing at the lightening-fast speed of 15 meters per seconds. This performance was already demonstrated on a customer machine, even on 2.9 µm OPP.
The basis of the Super Bias system technology, which generates a static charge to the film, was developed at Leybold in the 90s. Now LO's R & D department throws in a further development: the new Bias allows an optimized heat transfer from the web to the coating drum. The new feature is accomplished by the use of an electron beam gun controlled by a special and unique software package. Thicker coatings to new ultra thin films at high speeds without thermal damaging are possible because the film is charged by the gun. Consequently it does stick to the drum during coating. This new idea results in excellent resistivity measurements (1.0 - 10 Ohm/Sq) on ultra thin films at very high speeds (typical Al coating on PET 1.2 µm, 500 mm width: 1.0 Ohm/Sq @ > 6.5 m/s line speed).
Cap-M excels with a new winding system design as well. A special arrangement of the rollers and the use of highly effective and small plasma sources allow a short free span between the idler rollers. This reduces drag and stress on the web as it goes through the coating system. Ultra thin films (less than one micron) can be processed with ease. In combination with the unique Super Bias system this reduces tears or creases in the web.

About LEYBOLD OPTICS
As a prominent manufacturer of vacuum coating systems and developer of processes for the thin film technology, LEYBOLD OPTICS is represented in thirteen countries worldwide. The main focus of our processing technologies is on evaporation, sputtering and plasma-assisted coating processes for display technology, ophthalmics, precision optics, reflective and protective coatings, web coating, R&D, and special applications.
The basis of our success was laid in Germany 150 years ago by Ernst Leybold and Wilhelm Carl Heraeus. They addressed their pioneering spirit to the search for new manufacturing processes and founded our internationally recognized vacuum-technology company, which has set market standards ever since.
