K’ 2004: R&P stands for quality down to the last detail
Alzenau, 11/2004
When high-speed throughput and excellent layer properties meet in complete harmony, this is almost always due to the know-how of LEYBOLD OPTICS. Car headlights or wheel covers, electromagnetic shieldings, or lids for cosmetic bottles - the business unit ‘Reflection & Protection’ (R&P) stands for innovation and quality down to the last detail. At K’ 2004 in Düsseldorf, the world’s largest exhibition for plastics and rubber, the R&P developers now present the latest sputtering system, a family of products called PylonMet.
‘Just in time’, thanks to high throughput and perfect results: The PylonMet meets all demands that the automobile industry can possibly make on such a system. The rotating pylon carrying the substrates enables it to metallize even large, complex 3-dimensional parts. Furthermore, this new development offers various processes that can be tailored to suit the customers’ individual requirements, including base coat, sputter metallization using high-rate IPT cathodes, top coat, and the patented LEYBOLD OPTICS "Haze-No-More" anti-fog process.
Apart from the PylonMet, other well-known LEYBOLD OPTICS systems are to be rediscovered at K’. The product name of AluMet stands for an evaporation system that is used by Leybold customers world-wide. Here, the substrates in the vacuum are metallized by thermal evaporation. As rotation improves the homogeneity of the coating, the substrates are mounted onto rotating cages.
Thanks to high-rate cathode sputtering, the DynaMet family’s most prominent feature are the short cycle times. In fully automated production lines, these systems are able to coat molded parts very economically. Depending on the type of the system, up to four stations can be lined up around a common axle. Loading and unloading, pre-treatment, metallization and top coating: with the DynaMet several processes can be run simultaneously.
About LEYBOLD OPTICS
As a prominent manufacturer of vacuum coating systems and developer of processes for the thin film technology, LEYBOLD OPTICS is represented in thirteen countries worldwide. The main focus of our processing technologies is on evaporation, sputtering and plasma-assisted coating processes for display technology, ophthalmics, precision optics, reflective and protective coatings, web coating, R&D, and special applications.
The basis of our success was laid in Germany 150 years ago by Ernst Leybold and Wilhelm Carl Heraeus. They addressed their pioneering spirit to the search for new manufacturing processes and founded our internationally recognized vacuum-technology company, which has set market standards ever since.
