COLTS award a ‘Seal for Excellence’ to LEYBOLD OPTICS

Alzenau, 08/2004

Whether in Real Life Simulation, Variable Height Impact or AR Ease of Cleaning, the current range of LEYBOLD OPTICS coating systems achieved the very best results in tests carried out in the laboratories of Cooperative Ophthalmic Lens Testing Services (COLTS) in Clearwater, California/USA. As an independent testing laboratory COLTS apply very strict criteria for the award of their quality seal. Manufacturers from all over the world ask these experts to test their lenses and coating systems. CCS II, SYRUS II and BOXER from LEYBOLD OPTICS’ were on trial this year.

‘The test results prove that we are one of the best manufacturers of equipment’, says Antonio Requena, President of LEYBOLD OPTICS in USA. ‘It is, of course, very important for us that we have not only scored points for the systems, but also for the corresponding processes’, he adds. COLTS submitted CCS, SYRUS, BOXER, and the AR processes ‘Emixx’, ‘Beryll’, ‘Brilliant’ and ‘Optiflex Super’ to the endurance test - using various substrates. ‘All samples performed in a tight grouping around the COLTS Index of 4.00 proving that the consumer can trust the Leybold AR product to perform well throughout the normal lifetime for their prescription’, John Young, the director of COLTS Laboratories, sums up the results of his scientists.

In their tests John Young and his colleagues employed extreme conditions. The Real Life Simulation alone comprises five different tests, among them the examination of the cleaning characteristics (Rub Test), the Tumble Test, that checks the durability of the glass and plastic lenses, and the CHOCA testing series, which is to show three essential characteristics: the propensity for crazing (A effects), the spontaneous delamination (B effects), and finally the crosshatch tape pull or delamination (D effects).

By being admitted to the close circle of COLTS’ ‚Manufacturers of Excellence’ the German company will be able to strengthen its position in the ophthalmics market. LEYBOLD OPTICS will continue to set their main focus on research and development in order to offer their customers new, innovative systems and processes.

About LEYBOLD OPTICS

As a prominent manufacturer of vacuum coating systems and developer of processes for the thin film technology, LEYBOLD OPTICS is represented in thirteen countries worldwide. The main focus of our processing technologies is on evaporation, sputtering and plasma-assisted coating processes for 3D-Coating, Web, Display, Glass, Optics, Solar and Special Systems.

The basis of our success was laid in Germany 150 years ago by Ernst Leybold and Wilhelm Carl Heraeus. They addressed their pioneering spirit to the search for new manufacturing processes and founded our internationally recognized vacuum-technology company, which has set market standards ever since.
